  • OER and GOOpenCT – A Connecticut k20 Initiative for the 21st century

    The use of open education resources (OER) brings many benefits to students and faculty alike: flexibility in course design; textbook cost savings; deeper ability to collaborate with faculty at Eastern and at other institutions; and access to vast stores of collaboratively created learning materials. Join us for this informal presentation by two State of Connecticut experts to learn about OER use in course design and research as well as the State of Connecticut’s new OER site, www.GoOpenCT.org.

    “Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart” A Talkback with the filmmakers and a pre-screening of "Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart"

    Randy MacLowry and Tracy Heather Strain are a husband and wife film production team and founders of The Film Posse. They are also professors and co-directors of the Wesleyan Documentary project at Wesleyan University. As directors, producers and writers, they are committed to using film, video and interactive technology to reveal the ways that race, ethnicity, gender and class work to shape lives. This presentation will focus those issues with a springboard discussion of their recent award-winning PBS documentary “Lorraine Hansberry: Sighted Eyes/Feeling Heart” about the gifted African American playwright.

  • Learning to Recognize, Respond, and Resist: Experiences of Racial Discrimination in Childhood and Adolescence with Dr. Deborah Rivas-Drake

    On any given day, headlines underscore the realities of racism in youths’ lives. How do children and adolescents of color learn about racism, and how can we mitigate its impact on their well-being? In this talk, Dr. Deborah Rivas-Drake will provide an overview of how racism permeates and harms the everyday interpersonal experiences of youth of color in schools, among peers and in their communities. She will also discuss strategies that families and schools can use to build youths’ identities and capacities to help them not only navigate but also challenge and disrupt racism in daily life.

    Giovanna Rossi is a speaker, mentor and president of Collective Action Strategies, LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to improving the health and lives of women and families through policy and leadership development. Giovanna is passionate about making sure all children are supported and thriving, and addressing gender inequities in programs, policies and services. Giovanna is also host of The Well Woman Show on National Public Radio.
